Dougherty County Urges Community Support Amid SNAP and WIC Funding Disruptions
Albany, Ga. – Oct. 30, 2025 – Dougherty County officials are encouraging residents, businesses, and community organizations to rally together in support of local food banks and meal programs as families across Southwest Georgia face uncertainty following the suspension of federal nutrition assistance benefits.
Due to the ongoing federal government shutdown, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has notified the Georgia Department of Human Services (DHS) that it will be unable to issue new Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits beginning Nov. 1, 2025. While funding for the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program has not been officially halted, state officials have warned that resources are limited and could be impacted if the shutdown continues.
Impact on Families
SNAP households may not receive a benefit deposit for November if the funding lapse persists. Families are urged to use remaining balances on their Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards carefully and to confirm their available resources through the Georgia ConnectEBT website or mobile app.
WIC participants should also contact their local clinic to verify current benefit availability, as future funding remains uncertain.
A Call to Action: Help Fill the Gap
With reduced federal aid, local food banks and charitable organizations expect a sharp increase in demand for food and household essentials. Dougherty County leaders are calling on residents, churches, and businesses to lend a hand by donating nonperishable items, volunteering, or providing monetary contributions to support local food relief efforts.
