Leaders Celebrate Groundbreaking for the Albany Museum of Art Relocation
Albany, Ga-Dougherty County leaders, City of Albany officials, community partners and residents gathered to celebrate the groundbreaking for the Albany Museum of Art’s relocation to downtown Albany — a transformational project that official day will breathe new life into the long-vacant former Belk department store.
The new museum will serve as a 21st-century cultural and community hub, expanding educational opportunities, supporting economic growth and helping shape Albany’s growing arts district. The adaptive reuse project is expected to take approximately 18–24 months and will include expanded exhibit space, classrooms, event areas, a cafe and community gathering spaces.
Dougherty County Commission Chairman Lorenzo Heard opened the ceremony with an invocation, giving thanks for the vision and collaboration that will transform the once-deteriorated building into a “thriving, innovative, empowering, educating showcase museum” that welcomes all people.
Albany Mayor Bo Dorough highlighted the project as a catalyst for downtown revitalization and part of the community’s broader vision for economic development, tourism and cultural investment. Mayor Dorough also emphasized the museum’s role in strengthening partnerships among local arts organizations and creating new cultural opportunities for residents and visitors alike.
The Albany Museum of Art’s new location is expected to increase visitation, support local businesses and create new opportunities for community engagement through art, education and cultural programming.
