Severe Weather Week

Make a family emergency communications plan. Make a list of important information, identify an out of town contact for everyone to call, identify a safe meeting place near home and another one far away, give a printed copy of the plan to each family member and store it in the ready Georgia mobile app.
Severe Thunderstorm Safety. Severe thunderstorms can bring hail, strong wind gusts, lightning, heavy rain, flash floods and tornadoes. Severe Thunderstorm Watch : conditions favorable for thunderstorms - be prepared. Severe Thunderstorm Warning : A thunderstorm is imminent or occurring. Take Shelter now!
Lightning Safety. Safest, Go indoors and stat inside until 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder. Safe, Take shelter in a hard-topped vehicle. Not safe, Do not take shelter under a tree, on a hilltop, or in an open field. If you cannot get indoors or a vehicle, go to the lowest area nearby and make yourself as small a target as possible.
Flood Safety. Don't get swept away. More than half of flood victims are in vehicles swept away by moving water. 2 feet of fast-moving water can sweep away a full-size car. 6 inches of fast-moving water can knock a person off their feet. Check whether you need flood insurance, prepare a ready kit and develop an evacuation plan for your family.
Tornado Shelter Tips. Safest place, basement or interior room, stairwell or hallway on a low floor. Worse place, avoid windows, doors and outside walls. Cover yourself with blankets or a mattress for protection. A helmet can be used for added protection.
Arrival of Severe Weather. Diagram showing how to read a warning map as well as what weather may be approaching and at what time.
