Pet Safety

Pet Safety in Heat - never leave your pets in a parked car! Watch the humidity, limit exercise on hot days, provide ample shade and water, don't rely on a fan, watch out for hot pavement.

When is it too hot for your dog? Dogs can die of heat stroke in 15 minutes. Symptoms of heatstroke: excessive thirst, thick saliva, restlessness, rapid heartbeat. Inside a vehicle on a 78 degree day can become 120 degrees in minutes. On a 90 degree day, inside a car can become 160 degrees in 10 minutes.

Hot asphalt awareness - At 77 degrees the asphalt can be 125 degrees and skin destruction can occur in 60 seconds.

Keep dogs safe around water. Not all dogs are good swimmers, Dogs should wear life preservers, dogs are heavier in water, dogs don't understand the concept of resting or treading water so they'll tire fast, don't force your dog into the water.

Pet fire safety. 40,000 pets die in house fires each year and 1000 fires are started by pets each year. Remove or lock the knobs on your stove, do not leave candles unattended, pet-proof your home, and beware of water bowls on wooden decks. Make an emergency kit for your pet. It should include medication/medical records, leaches/harnesses or carriers, current photo in case they are lost, bowls/cat litter and pan/can opener, waste bags, toys and pet beds, emergency contact numbers, food and bottled water.
