A Call to Action: Help Fill the Gap

With reduced federal aid, local food banks and charitable organizations expect a sharp increase in demand for food and household essentials. Dougherty County leaders are calling on residents, churches, and businesses to lend a hand by donating nonperishable items, volunteering, or providing monetary contributions to support local food relief efforts.

Thunderstorm Safety

Lightning Safety. Safest, Go indoors and stat inside until 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder. Safe, Take shelter in a hard-topped vehicle. Not safe, Do not take shelter under a tree, on a hilltop, or in an open field. If you cannot get indoors or a vehicle, go to the lowest area nearby and make yourself as small a target as possible.

When thunder roars, go indoors! Stop all activities. Seek shelter in a substantial building or hard-topped vehicle. Wait 30 minutes after the storm to resume activities.

30 30 Rule. If the time between the flash of lightning and the sound of thunder is less than 30 seconds, take shelter for 30 minutes after the last thunder is heard.

Driving in the Rain. Give yourself more time for heavy traffic due to rain, keep a safe following distance between vehicles, obey the speed limit and drive slower in the rain as roads are very slick when wet, turn on your headlights, make sure the windscreen wipers are in proper working order and change wiper blades before the rainy season, never drive through moving water if you can't see the ground through it. Don't drive around barricades!

Lightning Dangers at the Work Place... work-related fatalities make up 15% of all lightning fatalities. If you work outdoors frequently, you are at higher risk of being struck by lightning. Occupations such as farming and ranching are some of the most dangerous when it comes to lightning.
